The charm of hand-dyed yarn

Here you will find tips for knitting with hand-dyed yarn and info about dyeing yarn with acid dyes.

Hand-dyed yarn

Hand-dyed skeins are unique, and there will be color differences even between skeins dyed in the same batch. We think this is the charm of hand-dyed yarn, and what makes the knitwear extra special and unique! Acid dyes also adhere differently to different qualities, and a color can look very different in untreated merino vs. superwash treated merino.

When we dye yarn, we strive to get the colors as similar as possible, so that it is predictable for you to order from us. However, we recommend that you order enough skeins for your project, as the colors will be as similar as possible when we dye them in the same batch. We cannot guarantee that the next batch will be similar enough for your current project.

Please note that colors may vary slightly due to screen and lighting effects.

Tips for knitting

The yarn is hand-dyed in skeins, and the color is stronger in some areas of the yarn. When knitting, this can cause unevenness. We therefore recommend that you knit with one thread from each skein every other round.

For structured knitting, we recommend our purest colors, which are almost solid colors. This will bring out both color and structure in the best possible way. Multi-colored yarn and speckled yarn work well in stocking stitch and as a pattern color, but of course you can knit exactly what you want in the colors you want <3

Washing of garments

Hand-dyed yarn may contain excess dye. We therefore recommend that the garment is washed separately the first time. If you are going to knit striped garments, you should wash the skein beforehand to ensure that the colors do not bleed through in the wash.

Both finished knitted garments and skeins should be washed with detergent intended for wool/silk (e.g. Milo). We recommend hand washing followed by machine spinning (highest possible speed). To preserve the color, you can add a little clear vinegar to the wash water.
